3 Reasons Why Long-Married Couples Need Valentine’s Day

Just because you are married for a long time doesn’t mean you should ignore or forget about Valentine’s Day. Maybe you have never celebrated this day since you got married. Maybe you forget about this day or ignore it. Maybe you and your spouse agree that this is only for couples who are dating and young and in love. But, I am here to tell you that this is an important day for your marriage too!

Why you may ask? You may be thinking to yourself; we are married for 20 years; we don’t need Valentine’s Day to show each other how much we love each other. We have two children and busy lives. Valentine’s Day is just another holiday of hyped up commercialization and pressure to buy cards, flowers and jewelry. It is silly.

Well, I am here to tell you that it’s not silly at all. Valentine’s Day is the day to celebrate love and to show affection and gratitude to your spouse. With decreasing intimacy and simmering romance, long married couples are the ones who actually need Valentine’s Day. It is the perfect time to add a burst of romance and love to their relationship.

I am pleading with you now to not ignore this important holiday! This should be a big deal for you and your spouse. Just go ahead and try it and see if it doesn’t nurture your relationship.

Here are three reasons why married couples need Valentine’s Day this year.

1. Valentine’s Day can rekindle the love and romance in your marriage.

This is a great time for you to plan something special for you and your spouse. Maybe it has been awhile since you have had a date night or done something romantic for your partner. It doesn’t matter, you can do this! You will score major points with your love and probably get lucky! Plan a special dinner out or cook a romantic dinner at home. Remember your dating days and how you used to be more romantic? What did you do back then to romance your partner? Make it a romantic evening and make sure you kiss, hug and be intimate together!

2. Be Intentional About Celebrating This Day Together.

Being intentional about your marriage can make it or break it. Couples can begin to drift apart when they aren’t intentional about their relationship. They don’t celebrate this holiday together or plan date nights. Then, without even realizing it, they drift apart. So, take this opportunity to nurture your marriage and show your spouse how much you love them.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money or go all out on this holiday to show your spouse how much you love them. You can decide that you stay home on this holiday and cook dinner together and watch a romantic movie, or you decide that you want to go away for the weekend. It’s a chance to make rituals or traditions together that you can repeat year after year.

3. Valentine’s Day Is A Special Day to Express Your Love To Each Other In A Special Way.

This holiday is a great opportunity to emotionally connect with your spouse by letting them know you feel about them. Write it in a card or tell them. To simply choose to not express your love on Valentine’s Day would be ridiculous. Valentine’s Day is the day to express your love and show your spouse how important they are to you. This increases emotional connection between couples which leads to greater physical connection! And don’t all couples want that?!

So, what I am trying to say here is that Valentine’s Day is a big deal for you and your spouse and should not be ignored. It can rekindle the romance in your marriage so make a plan to celebrate together, be intentional, and express your love to each other!
